It's as if you are on the island and peeking over the author's shoulder as he whispers back what he knows about the wildlife, the island, and Puget Sound. Natural elements are blended with information about present threats, giving the reader the all-important understanding that the author is interested in advocating preservation and change. Thanks to Rick Wood for a beautiful, inspiring book about the amazing wonders of the Pacific Northwest. Rick's message throughout the book - to STOP, listen, watch, observe, and learn from our natural surroundings - resonates deeply with me, and I hope many read the book and learn to love and live in our natural surroundings in a way that respects and preserves the wildlife and beauty that can be found in our every day lives.
Rick's words and beautiful photography capture the diverse life and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, and teaches us how to stop and just BE in nature, not always having to "do" something, or be distracted by our electronic gadgets. Our society is becoming such a fast-paced, scan it and move on to something else kind of world, that we need this gentle reminder to get outside, wherever we live, find nature, and just sit and look around to really observe what is going on around us.
The author gives compelling examples and evidence of how our world is being reshaped by human hands, at the detriment of animals.
I found the book insightful, yet not accusatory, which would be off-putting to many readers.
Overall, a great book that my kids are now reading, too!
...wish I had it in color but I've got the black & white and I enjoyed it very much. A very quick read with some awesome photography. I would like to see more books from this author, as well as more photography.
I read Nature Aware on my and really enjoyed it. The pictures are not very clear though on an older black and white . I really like seeing the higher resolution pictures when the author, Rick Wood, posts them on FaceBook! His writing style is conversational and makes me feel like we are just talking while observing nature and wildlife. There is something very soothing about this activity.
